New: China memorial

Some years ago the town of Poperinge purchased a plot of land near the former Chinese camp and burial place at Busseboom. A Chinese memorial has been unveiled there in November 2017. The memorial consists of a Chinese garden, with two statues. One statue is created by the Chinese artist Yan Shufen and is paid for by the Chinese embassy in Belgium.

The other monument is a statue of a Chinese labourer and a bronze memorial plaque with the names of the "Thirteen of Busseboom". Those thirteen Chinese labourers lost their lives during a German bombardment on the 15th of November 1917. The statue and the plaque have found shelter in a pavilion created by the Belgian designer Stefan Schöning.

It is the first Chinese memorial site on Belgian (and European) territory.
