Enlisted in the 11th Battalion, D Coy; Attested 21st October 1914, Home service(training)
until 23rd November 1915. Embarked for France 23rd November 1916 on the troopship Princess Victoria with the 11th Battalion Border Regiment.
Problems with scabies and eczema-admitted to hospital 1st January 1916, discharged
back to 11th Battalion 3rd February 1916, resuming duty on the 9th February 1916.
Wounded in action on 1st July 1916 . Gunshot wounds left arm, left leg, lower Jaw.
and passed through the army medical services to 6th General Hospital (Rouen)on 6th July 1916
Being sent home by the Hospital Ship "St Andrew" on the 7th July 1916 and sent to Boscombe Hospital, Hampshire on the 8th July 1916. He was in hospital until the 8th November 1916, receiving treatment, then Addington Park War Hospital, Croydon until 28st April 1917 and rejoined the depot company of the Border Regiment until 28th July 1917.
Posted to the 3rd Battalion Border Regiment until the 18th August 1917, when he embarked from
Felixstowe to France and went to the 8th Battalion Border Regiment for another period of service overseas, joining them in the field on the 31st August 1917.
Served until 1st February 1918 then another bout of scabies brought another hospitalisation, rejoining the 8th Bn on the 25th Feb 1918. He then went on leave from 19th March- 2nd April 1918.
