Chinese memorial site ‘Busseboom’

The Town of Poperinge commissioned Stefan Schöning to design a shelter for the Chinese labourer. The bronze statue of this labourer was created by artist Jo Bocklandt and has been to China for a brief passage at the Shanghai World Expo of 2010. It has now found a worthy home in a subtle wooden pavilion. The statue overlooks the former cemetery of thirteen Chinese labourers who have been killed during a German air-raid on the 15th of November 1917.

The embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Belgium wanted to commemorate the centenary of the bombardment and commissioned Yan Shufen to create a bronze statue of three Chinese labourers. They represent the courage and effort of all Chinese labourers who came to Belgium and France during the Great War.
