Other data related to military career Gazetted 2nd Lt. 3 June 1915; went to France 23 July 1916, as Signalling Officer; after twelve months active service, he was transferred from the Royal Fusiliers to the R.F.C., and came home in July 1917 to complete his training, leaving again for the front on August 14th. In September 1917 he encountered four enemy aeroplanes, and after firing 200 rounds of ammunition, succeeded in bringing down a Hun machine and dispersing the remainder.

Wounded 12 September, artillery observation patrol, left 5.10 p.m.; direct hit by British shell fired from the allied ground battery, Verbrandemolen, crashed; 2Lt. NC Whittall was the observer, Miles the pilot, also KIA and buried in Lijssenthoek
