• Other data related to military career Prior to the war, he had served for 21 years in the militia with the 13th Regiment from Hamilton. William served in the Canadian Mounted Rifles for two years during the Boer War in South Africa. He went to Valcartier Quebec in 1914 on the outbreak of the war and was assigned to the 15th Battalion as it's Deputy Commanding Officer with the rank of Major. He went overseas with the Battalion and during the first major engagement for the Canadians at the 2nd Ypres gas attack in April 1915 he was awarded the DSO and Mentioned in Dispatches. He was promoted to LCol and made Commanding Officer immediately after 2nd Ypres. He made a habit of wearing a French army helmet instead of the standard British issue 'Tommy' helmet so that the soldiers would recognize him at the front and he made a point of always being in the front line trenches with his men.
