  • At 2 p.m. the Americans attacked again between "Elzenwalle" and "Bollartbach". Fate helped the American troops as a shell of the German heavy artillery had fallen short and killed or wounded a considerable number of the German defenders. After the fighting many American stretcher bearers could be observed from the German lines. Karl may have been severely wounded by "friendly fire" and among those who were recovered from the battlefield by American first-aid men.
The German losses on this day were: 7 dead, 23 wounded, 12 missing. They must have counted Karl among the missing, as from their perspective his body had disappeared.
