  • Joined the 19th Alberta Dragoons as a trooper; three times wounded; Military Cross in November 1916, 'although wounded, he commanded his company with great courage and determination. Later, he materially assisted in capturing an enemy trench. He was again wounded, but remained at duty until he was ordered back to the rear' (London Gazette 14 November 1916); DSO for 'Conspicious gallantry and devotion to duty. When in command of two companies he led them with great dash to the final objective, capturing a large number of the enemy, machine guns and mortars. He showed great initiative and resource in so disposing his forces, under heavy fire and with inadequate support, as to obtain and retain possession of high ground which was essential to the success of the attack. His coolness at a critical juncture was directly responsible for the safety of three battalions. His fearlessness in personally supervising the work of digging in under heavy barrage was most conspicuous, and his work throughout the engagement was splendid as an example to all ranks' (London Gazette 26 July 1917)
